Dick Heins

Dick Heins was born on 29 September 1959 in The Hague. He is a Dutch comic artist and illustrator. He grew up in Wassenaar, later lived in Warmond, and eventually settled in Oosterhout (North Brabant), where he lives with his wife, Cindy. Besides drawing, he enjoys cooking and reading. His work is known for its humour, lively energy, and bustling scenes.

After secondary school, Dick studied graphic design at SDUB, the former state printer and publisher. There, he first came across the work of Jan van Haasteren. Not long afterwards, he contacted Jan and visited him at home – a day he still counts as a highlight. Jan introduced him to techniques such as working with ecoline and preparing paper, knowledge that strongly influenced Dick’s development.

Career

In 1978, Dick received his first paid commission and began his professional drawing career. He founded his own studio, Studio Dick Heins, and for more than fifteen years created comics for the puzzle magazine Bingo. Later, he worked for Bobo, Eppo, Junior Suske en Wiske and several staff magazines. Since 2018, he has also been drawing for Jumbo’s Wasgij puzzles.

At Studio Jan van Haasteren

In 2013, Jan invited him, together with Rob Derks, to join the newly established Studio Jan van Haasteren. Dick impressed with his style and enthusiasm and became part of the team. His first puzzles for the studio included Chaos on the Field, The Fair – Dodgems, The Fair – Hook-a-Duck, Chinese New Year and Seaport.

Distinctive Style

Dick draws inspiration from everyday life: street scenes, gatherings, comic fairs and conversations with colleagues. Like the other studio members, he includes his own recurring elements in his puzzles. His father always appears, as does his close friend Maurice, easily recognisable in his wheelchair. He also adds a personal tribute: a butterfly symbolising his wife, Cindy, who loves butterflies.
